Childhood and Adolescence

  • At 16, Brent has already had the discipline and emotional issues for many years. He takes pride in his indiscretions: skipping school, starting fires, getting in fights, petty theft, and fantasizing about his classmates and adults in his life dying horrible, painful deaths.  
  • 14-year-old Carl was abandoned by his mother when he was seven. But even before his mother left, at the age of four, Carl was already blinking a lot and made jerky movements with his head or his shoulder. Eventually, the uncontrollable blurting out of bad words has become a part of his daily life.  
  • Dana is a 12-year-old girl who is actively and excessively disruptive and combative toward others. She is very difficult in the classroom and has had discipline issues throughout this school year. She's becoming increasingly cruel and doesn't consider feelings when acting out.  
  • Katie is a spirited, fun-loving, confident 12-year-old girl, but she has trouble focusing and does not have a lot of friends. She's constantly getting in trouble at home and school because she's easily distracted.  
  • 9-year-old Kevin repeatedly has outbursts and gets angry over little things. Several times a week he gets confrontational or violent when met with criticism or resistance. He is easily frustrated and intentionally hurtful at times.  
  • Terry is now 13 years old but has been stuttering since he first learned to talk. He's endured endless teasing at school but is beginning to find the resources to overcome his disorder. But his father's alcoholism and constant disappointment in him are making it all the harder for him to overcome it.
